Just finished watching The Lives of Others. Most amazing film I’ve seen in quite sometime. It’s interesting to me that those who support the Patriot Act are the same folks who call liberals “socialists.” Anyone who supports this condemning piece of legislation should also watch this movie as a quick reminder as to the importance of the freedom of speech. This is how it all starts. And this is why the government has always considered artists to be dangerous. Why do you think they’re always the first programs to get whacked during economic times?
I write this as an artist who is fully grateful that his music can be free from the government’s scorn, and for those who also believe certain books should be banned, the news should be filtered, and that art should be censored. Let’s keep it that way. Here’s to hoping the Obama administration files the Patriot Act where it belongs: in the incinerator. Long live freedom of speech and expression.
