butterfly.jpgGot the rough mix of the first studio sessions for the new record on Monday. Thundering Sky’s Chris Magruder (Mags to most) never ceases to amaze me with his ability to capture a song as though it’s the first time it’s ever been played. There’s an essence of infancy to these tracks, true ideation at work. The songs are round and airy, an open window with a warm breeze blowing back the drapes.

Mags took a less-is-more approach to those sessions, using very few microphones, focusing more on placement. He didn’t mic every drum, but instead used mostly room mics to capture Steve Scully’s deft approach to hitting snares, toms and cymbals. He also had Mark Hickox plug straight into the board to fully utilize the incredible tone of his ’63 P-Bass (with technique to match). The foundation is extremely solid at this point, and anything added will be minimal. Some of the songs already sound like they’re complete. Can’t wait to share.
