Marty performing at a house concert in North Hampton, NH - fall 2008.

Times are tough. People still need to have fun. Where better to have it than the friendly confines of your living room?

Soon I will be launching House Party Concerts. The idea is simple: live, original music in your living room (with a few covers thrown in). Turn it into a potluck, have your friends bring a bottle of wine (or two), ask for a donation, and you’ve suddenly got an event that folks will talk about for years.

As host, your only responsibility will be to gather 25+ friends and collect donations ($6-10 suggested). I’ll supply the music, stories and (hopefully) a few laughs. You don’t need a Wembly-sized living room. Something in the range of 12×15 will work just fine. This turns out to be a really great way to have fun on the cheap. As host, it’ll run you exactly zero dollars. You just need to supply your living room, a few friends, and a hat or bucket for which to collect donations.

A good friend who is hosting one of these events for her husband’s 50th recently emailed me and said “I don’t have the money to rent a hall, so this is perfect!”

At a recent house concert a couple of months back, Edge and I played to a party of 20. One of the guests even joined us to sing a few tunes. Many attendees emailed me afterward, thanking us for an amazing time. My friend Marc hosted a similar event back in November that was a smashing success. I also used one of these events as a mechanism for collecting toys for financially-challenged families (thanks Kelley and Jeff for hosting). Over this past weekend we had 30+ friends over to test the waters in our own house, and it was an absolute blast.

Email me if you are interested in hosting a house concert, or if you’re just interested in learning where you can atttend one in your area.
