Just finished penning a song this afternoon that I’d started last month. It’s called Away, and is pretty much in standard country time. Like many songs I write, I started this one on the drive into work. I didn’t have my recorder with me that day, so I had to use the voice memo on my cellphone. Just found that little nugget today when I was erasing messages. Here are the words:

Away
I live in silence since the last time we met
Since you broke me in half with your words
A pain never rivaled, it came like a storm
And left me alone without calm

The taste of your fingers on my willing lips
You refused to kiss me, again
The shape of the moon with one star in tow
Dangled from heaven above

In the wake of the day when the birds sing out loud
And the sun touches down on mountains and shores
In the wake of the day, when the door’s swinging wide
And you left me to die,
Away,
Away

My heart was emptied, a dry river bed
A bud gone to seed in the wind
A love once aplenty with wonder and light
Is shadowed by words misconstrued

The sound of the soft rain on my windowsill
A memory, a lost souvenir
The shape of your body all tight against mine
My aspirations are set to expire

In the wake of the day when the birds sing out loud
And the sun touches down on mountains and shores
In the wake of the day, when the door’s swinging wide
And you left me to die,
Away,
Away

Spring rescues winter from a withering fate
You return to kiss me again
