Just finished penning a song this afternoon that I’d started last month. It’s called Away, and is pretty much in standard country time. Like many songs I write, I started this one on the drive into work. I didn’t have my recorder with me that day, so I had to use the voice memo on [...]

 Songwriting is a curious process. As songwriters, we often fall in love with ideas, only to later feel betrayed by their obscurity, or perhaps by thinking they suddenly turned into something other than we originally intended, as if our absence from it makes the thought weaker, less accessible.
But absence does change things, including art.

Just finished watching The Lives of Others. Most amazing film I’ve seen in quite sometime. Just added a video of me and my good friend Jeff Hawkinson playing in my living room back in January 2009. Jenny shot the video, so it is in landscape mode. Turn your head completely horizontal and you’ll never know the difference. Jayhawk isn’t actually in the video, but you can hear his rousing banjo.

Something occurred to me while listening to a discussion about Darwin’s Theory of Evolution on NPR at lunch. It made me think about the evolution of music, and more specifically, rock and roll.
